Firefox will soon offer a way to block all of its generative AI features

Engadget

Like practically every other tech company under the sun, Mozilla has been jamming generative AI features into its products . The organization has now acknowledged that not everyone wants things like chatbots in the Firefox sidebar, so it's giving you the option to turn off all of that. On February 24 (or earlier in Firefox Nightly builds), Mozilla will roll out Firefox 148, which will include an AI controls section in the desktop browser settings. From here, you'll be able to block current and future generative AI features, or only enable select tools. At the jump, you'll have the option to disable (or enable) chatbots in the sidebar, automated translations and alt text generation for PDFs.

Urgent warning to Alexa users as Amazon prepares to KILL a popular privacy feature - here's what it means for you

Daily Mail - Science & tech

But if you have an Amazon Echo, there's bad news for you - as Amazon is about to controversially kill a popular privacy feature. Until now, some Amazon Echo devices have had the option to process commands locally'on-device', keeping your voice within the confines of your home. But from March 28, all Alexa-powered Echo smart speakers will send your voice recordings to the cloud, whether you like it or not. Cory Doctorow, a blogger and expert on digital rights management, called it'absolutely unforgivable' because it will let Amazon workers snoop on all Echo recordings. Amazon has already received criticism for storing conversations users have with Alexa, which have been listened to and transcribed by staff, it admitted in 2019.

Pixel 8 Pro: Google's longer-lasting, AI-packed camera phone

The Guardian

Google's top Pixel is back to outshoot, outsmart and outlast the competition, promising seven years of full software support. But whether the Pixel 8 Pro's high-end features justify a sharp price increase is open to debate. The phone features a refined aluminium and glass design. The excellent 6.7in OLED screen is now flat, not curved at the edges as was the case for previous Pixel Pros. It is super smooth for scrolling and can hit an exceptional 2,400nit peak brightness, though only for a few minutes in hot sunshine before dimming to still very readable levels.

Adobe brings more generative AI features to Express

Engadget

Few tech companies have embraced generative AI as wholeheartedly as Adobe. At Adobe Max, its annual creativity conference, it unveiled a new version of the Firefly GAI model. Not only that, the company announced more GAI features for Adobe Express, just weeks after making Firefly more broadly available in the app. Adobe Express now includes features such as Generative Fill. This enables users to add, remove or replace items, people and other aspects of images using text prompts.

Google Pixel 8 lineup has a bevy of generative AI features

Engadget

Over the course of its Made by Google event on Wednesday, it became clear that Google intends to infuse its its new Pixel 8 phones with generative AI. The company is adding support for on-demand summaries, translations and read-aloud features for articles and web pages, plus more tricks, the company announced during its keynote. All of this is handled through the Assistant, either via spoken word or on-screen prompts. On the new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, the Assistant will be able to quickly summarize website text, offering a breakdown of the page and bullet points of relevant content. Prompts will pop up at the bottom of the summary with potential follow-ups -- an article about iPhones, for example, will end with action buttons reading, "About iPhones," and, "Who invented the iPhone?"

Opera's game-focused browser gets an AI 'copilot'

Engadget

Opera has rolled out a new version of its browser for gamers with the same generative AI features that launched with its One browser. The company debuted its Aria AI with the One browser that came out in June. At the time, Opera also gave its Android browser the AI treatment, but the GX browser for gamers remained AI-less. Now, the company is giving GX users the choice to use Aria's features -- if they want. They'll have to enable "Early Bird" in settings and then switch on "Aria Extension" and "Aria Command Line" to be able to use the AI assistant.

Google's Duet AI brings more generative features to Workspace apps

Engadget

After OpenAI's ChatGPT caught the tech world off guard late last year, Google reportedly declared a "code red," scrambling to plan a response to the new threat. Today at Google I/O 2023, we finally see a more fleshed-out picture of how the company views AI's role in its cloud-based productivity suite. Google Duet AI is the company's branding for its collection of AI tools across Workspace apps. Like Microsoft Copilot for Office apps, Duet AI is an umbrella term for a growing list of generative AI features across Google Workspace apps. First, the Gmail mobile app will now draft full replies to your emails based on a prompt in a new "Help me write" feature.

LinkedIn's new AI will write messages to hiring managers

Engadget

LinkedIn is experimenting with a new generative AI feature for job hunters. The company is testing a new feature that will generate brief, cover letter-like messages candidates can send to hiring managers on the platform. The feature is starting to roll out now for the site's premium subscribers. With the update, users will see the option to "Let AI draft a message to the hiring team" alongside open roles on the platform's jobs page. The feature draws on "information from your profile, the hiring manager's profile, the job description, and the company of interest" to create a "highly personalized" message, according to the company.

Opera One is a browser designed for generative AI features

Engadget

Opera has released the early access version of its completely redesigned browser that it plans to launch for all platforms later this year. It's called Opera One, and it was designed to have a cleaner look with plenty of open space for future generative AI features and extensions in its sidebar and address bar. Opera says it has implemented a new multithreaded compositor and its new modular design principles for the browser to enable a fresh batch of features that include what it calls "tab islands." The browser has the capability to automatically and intuitively group websites people open based on their content. It will open all pages with menus and restaurant details in one island, for instance, and all tabs with Google Docs in another.
